Also known as "Wheels," Bill Wheelock competed for both the indoor and outdoor track and field teams from 1962-1964 and was named tri-captain as a senior. He helped the Knights to a three-year record of 16-2-1, earning Collegiate Track Conference championships in the 60-yard, 100-yard, 220-yard, 440-yard and 600-yard events.

In those days, most events were run on cinder tracks and Wheelock still managed to set many program records. Those marks merited his selection to compete on the New York Metropolitan team in London, England.

He also earned a spot on a team that competed in Africa for eight weeks against national teams from five countries and also qualified for the 1964 Olympic trials in the 220-yard dash. Wheelock put on a stellar performance, finishing third at the trials behind only the eventual gold and silver medal winners, at a time when only the top two went on to the Olympics.
