The 1970 - 71 team, led by head coach Al LoBalbo, compiled a 16 - 7 overall record, including a home record of 10 - 1. The Knights held CCNY to a season-low 30 points, finishing the season ranked number one nationally in team defense. The Knights held opponents to an average 53.7 points per game, far surpassing Army's second place mark of 58.5 points per game. The Knights held 11 of their 23 opponents to 50 or fewer points and outscored opponents be nearly 10 points per game. They were also on the top of the list of "Fewest Personal Fouls Committed" with a 13.4 average per game, totaling just 309 fouls in 23 games. The team was led by senior co-captain Howard Weinstein, center, Peter Tierney, forward-guard. The FDU schedule included 13 of the ECAC's major independents, eight of the middle-sized independents, and Washington and Lee outside the vast area of ECAC membership.
