Russ Robinson served as head volleyball coach of the Knights from 1985 to 1989, turning the program into one of the most successful in the northeast. During his five years the Knights posted a 126-58 record, a .685 winning percentage and won three consecutive conference championships from 1987 to 1989.

After recording a 26-12 record during his second season, Robinson led the Knights to a 31-14 mark, including a perfect 4-0 in ECAC Metro play and a first-ever ECAC Tournament appearance. The following year the Knights earned another trip to the ECAC Tournament after registering a 25-15 overall record and finished a perfect 4-0 in Northeast Conference action.

In 1989, his final season as head coach, Robinson went out in style by guiding the team to a 40-13 mark, setting a school record for most wins in a season. That team also finished a perfect 6-0 in the NEC and qualified for both the ECAC Tournament and the Women's Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
