Although he came to Fairleigh Dickinson as a hurdles specialist, Joseph Murphy left as a three-sport standout. He set five hurdle records in the 120 high hurdles, 180 low hurdles, 220 low hurdles, 330 and 440 intermediate hurdles.

Murphy ran a time of 37.8 in the 330 yard hurdles to log the third-fastest time in the country and qualify for the Olympic Trials in the process. He ran the lead-off leg of the school record-setting 4x100 team and was recognized as the top hurdler in the Metro area. He captained the team as a senior after scoring 122.25 single-season points, among the top-five all-time upon his graduation.

He helped both the basketball and soccer teams to their respective NCAA Tournaments in 1963 and is believed to be the only FDU athlete to accomplish that feat. Murphy scored the game-winning goal against West Chester in 1963, which at the time was a nationally-ranked soccer powerhouse. He also served as Senior Class and Letterman Club President.
