Carol Kuzen Black began her long and successful fencing career by winning the Fairleigh Dickinson University Championships in 1959 and was honored as the "Best Freshman." The next year she posted a 48-3 dual-meet record, helping the team to its first undefeated season. She helped the team to its first NIWFA Championship title that year and went on to earn seven NIWFA medals in her career.

Black earned a spot on the U.S. Team to participate in the 1961 Junior World Championships. In her senior year she led the Knights to a silver medal in the NIWFA Championship and took bronze in the individuals. During her graduate school years at Fairleigh Dickinson, she continued to excel and represented the United States at the 1963, 1965 and 1966 World Championships.

Black continued her competitive fencing career until 1968, with selections to national teams and then picked up the sport again nearly 20 years later, garnering several more medals until her retirement in 1996.
