Young dominated the 55-meter hurdles from 1983 through 1984, claiming back-to-back NCAA Indoor Championships in the event. During the outdoor season those years, she was the NCAA Outdoor runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles. Young's blazing speed earned her spots on the 1979 Pan-American team and 1980 U.S. Olympic team. While at FDU, Young tied the World Indoor Record for the 60-meter hurdles (7.37 seconds) and set the U.S. record in the 50-meter hurdles (6.85 seconds) as well.
