After graduating from NYU, Jay Horwitz served as FDU Sports Information Director from 1972 – 1980 working in both Teaneck and Rutherford. He was the first-ever full-time SID and found unique angles to promote and publicize all of the programs at Fairleigh Dickinson, both varsity and club. As a result of his tireless efforts, Knights athletics witnessed an unprecedented growth in media coverage including television, radio and print. In 1978, Horwitz vaulted Fairleigh Dickinson into the national conscious promoting then world record holder Franklin Jacobs. During his tenure at FDU, he consistently promoted the men’s soccer and baseball programs, which made regular appearances in the playoffs. He went above and beyond; finding feature stories such as the all-time hit by pitch record and the oldest freshman football player to keep the Knights in the headlines regardless of overall records. He took pride in each and every team, committing stats to memory and reciting any fact regarding the programs. In 1980, Horwitz left to work with the New York Mets, eventually becoming the Vice President of Media Relations and Association Travel Director. In 1998, he earned the Fishel Award, given to the top media relations person in baseball. In 2006, he earned the Thurmon Munson Award for his dedication and excellence within the media relations community.
