A three-year captain for the Knights, Michael Chris Payne graduated ranked second all-time in scoring (1,541 points) and fourth on the career rebounding list (665). Payne never averaged below 56 percent from the floor in leading Fairleigh Dickinson to a 62-48 record over four years that included three consecutive ECAC Metro Tournaments. As a freshman, he set the school record for points in a game with a 34-point performance versus the University of Baltimore.  That season (1980-81) he finished the year averaging 16.5 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per game, earning the Ben Johnson Memorial Award for the most outstanding freshman in New Jersey. A career marked by memorable performances and numerous conference player and rookie honors, he posted a 27-point, 19-rebound showing versus Wagner, a 28-point, 12-rebound night versus Cleveland State and a 28-point, 14 rebound outing again versus Wagner. Payne averaged 15.0 points per game in 1981-82, shooting 61.8 percent from the field. The following season, he averaged 15.3 ppg, coupled with 8.0 rpg. Payne concluded his career with a 10.2 ppg season.
