Robert T. Bailey was a fierce competitor who was named a team captain of the Fairleigh Dickinson Track program, competing in the 440, 880, mile, and two-mile events, along with numerous relays and also ran with the cross country team.

During his career he held school records in the 880-yard, the mile and two-mile. Bailey ran a time of 4:09 for the mile and competed in the 880 special event at Madison Square Garden.

He was also a member of the record-breaking distance medley relay team in 1970 and won a team-leading 20 medals that year, while finishing third on the squad in scoring. In 1971, Bailey led the team again with 15 medals and finished fourth in scoring to close out his collegiate career.
