One of the Metropolitan area’s elite sprinters in the decade of the 1970s, Joseph Thomas specialized in the 220 and 440 yard distances. Throughout his career Thomas anchored the 440, 880, 1600 relays earning the moniker “The Bacon Man” because of his innate ability to always bring home the victory. At the Penn Relays, before 35,000 spectators, Thomas anchored the mile relay to a time of 3:04.8 en route to defeating Army and Navy in the Championship Division. As a sophomore in 1976, Thomas was instrumental in the revitalization of the Track and Field program, helping the team to an 8-2 dual meet record that included unprecedented third place finishes at the New Jersey and CTC championships. That season, Thomas won the New Jersey State Championship and the Metropolitan Championship in both the 100 and 220 yard dashes en route to a second place finish in both at the IC4A championships. Thomas’s school record of 9.4 in the 100-yard dash and 20.8 for the 220-yard dash still stand today. He also anchored 440; 880 yard and mile relay teams to new school records.
