A three-year All-America honoree, Melanie Jones helped the fencing team to a 62-21 overall team record over four years. She was a 1990 and 1991 U.S. Olympic Sports participant, Junior World, Junior PanAmerican and World Cadet Team member.

Jones was a member of the gold medal winning team at the 1990 U.S. Olympic Sports Festival and she received a bid to the NCAA National Individual Championships, placing ninth in the country to earn All-America honorable mention recognition in her collegiate national debut.

In 1991, Jones became the second Fairleigh Dickinson fencer to win a medal at the Temple Open and was named the NCAA Female Fencer of the Year in 1992, only the third Fairleigh Dickinson fencer to receive that honor. She started her junior season with a spectacular three-consecutive medal finish at the Fleuret D'Or, Temple Open and Penn State Open, earning bronze, gold and silver, respectively.

One of only nine Fairleigh Dickinson Fencers to be a New Jersey State Champion, she was the team MVP in 1992 and 1994. As a senior she captained the team to the Directors Award honoring the highest team GPA and in 1994 she was given the Dr. Harriet McCormick Award for Outstanding Female Athlete.
