Stan Wright was the director of athletics at the Metropolitan Campus from 1979-85, and his achievements are shown in what he had accomplished. Wright served as the head coach of the track and field programs at Texas Southern University (1960-67), Western Illinois (1967-69) and Sacramento State (1969-79). He coached the Singapore track and field team in the 1962 Asia Games and Malaysia in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. In 1966, Wright became the first African-American head coach of the United States national track and field team when he was assigned to lead squad in dual meets against Poland and the former Soviet Union. In 1972, Wright was the assistant coach in charge of the sprints for the U.S. Olympic Team. He was named chairman of the men's track and field committee of the Amateur Athletic Union and its successor as the sport's national governing body, The Athletics Congress, where he served as the TAC treasurer from 1989-92. Wright also served many years with the United States Olympic Committee. In 1993, he was elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. In 1998, Wright was inducted into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Texas Southern University Athletics Hall of Fame and the Drake Relays Hall of Fame. Wright was the second athletic director in FDU history and the first African American athletic administrator. Wright passed away on Nov. 8, 1998.
