The following year he was named team captain and posted a 12-2 record with seven pins as he earned team most valuable player honors and became the first wrestler in program history to compete in the NCAA Championships.

As a team captain again in 1960-61, Gras finished his career with a personal-best single season record of 23-2 with 14 of those wins by decision and nine by pin. He repeated that year as team most valuable player and also earned Fairleigh Dickinson's Most Outstanding Athlete of the Year. Gras was the first Fairleigh Dickinson wrestler to win the Metropolitan Collegiate championship twice, once at 147 lbs and once at 157 lbs.
