In 1975, Nery ranked among the top 10 individuals in the Metropolitan Golf Association and helped the Knights to a fifth place finish at the MGA Intercollegiate Team Championships.

The following year Nery won the MGA individual title, led the squad to a fourth place team finish at the MGA championship and was named the team's Most Valuable Player. During his senior season in 1977 he qualified for the prestigious ECAC Golf Championship and went on to finish his career competing in every match and tournament that the Knights participated in.

Following his collegiate days, Nery continued his success at the amateur level and has since won over 50 amateur golf tournaments both as an individual and in team format.
