HACKENSACK, N.J.
- This fall Fairleigh Dickinson student-athletes are being asked to participate in the #KnightsEatRight nutrition program.  Under the guidance of sports nutritionist Scott Fisher (R.D.), head strength and conditioning coach Kyle McMinn and nutrition intern Lindsay Maurer the #KnightsEatRight program is designed to promote healthy eating habits that are specifically geared toward fueling athletes.

"Three years ago, I conducted a comprehensive study to look at the level of nutrition knowledge and eating behaviors among our student-athlete population," Fisher explained when presenting the program.  "The study revealed that while our student-athletes had reasonable knowledge regarding proper nutrition choices, they failed miserably when it came to actually eating right."

"We created the #KnightsEat Right nutrition program to help our student-athletes make better food choices.  I believe the program is unique in that it integrates the use of social media - Instagram - to provide our student-athletes on-going feedback on their food choices."

The program also features a competitive aspect as it will be a factor in the selection of the Iron Knight Awards, which McMinn presents at the end of each year to individuals that excel in the strength and conditioning program.

FDU student-athletes have been educated on the "Athlete's Plate" which is a version of "My Plate" which was developed specifically for the way athletes need to eat.

"Using the Athlete's Plate as a guide, we've asked them to take pictures of their food choices at each meal and send them to the #KnightEatRight hashtag on Instagram so we can provide feedback and award points for good choices.  We've created an account as well at "FDUSportsNutrition" to provide on-going nutrition education and to recognize the student-athletes doing well with the program," Fisher added.

To further support the student-athletes and their desire to eat better, a sports nutrition page has been added to the FDU Athletics website.  The page has links to a multitude of sports nutrition topics pertaining to athletes.

Any FDU student-athletes with questions regarding the #KnightsEatRight program should contact Fisher or McMinn.
