Scouting the Seawolves
Stony Brook come to the Banks of the Hackensack with a 1-3-1 record and looking to bounce back from a tough 2-0 loss to Pac-12 side Colorado. The Seawolves are the reigning two-time America East Champions and, as a result, have made the last two NCAA Tournaments. The side are expected to do the same, according to the preseason Coaches' Poll, for good reason. The side return five All-Conference honorees, including senior Alyssa Francese, who has scored one of the Seawolves' two goals, and assisted on the other. Junior goalkeeper Emerson Richmond Burke also earned an America East Defensive Player of the Week award for her two shutouts in a win over Columbia and a draw with LIU.
Scouting the Knights
The Knights continued their exemplary defensive performances as of late in Baltimore as they played Loyola Maryland to a 0-0 draw. Freshman goalkeeper Malene Nielsen logged two clean sheets and made 12 saves over the last two games and earned all three NEC weekly honors, Player of the Week, Defensive Player of the Week, and Rookie of the Week, thanks to her performances. Nielsen has helped anchor the stout Knights backline who have conceded just two goals in their last four matches. Also in the backline, and despite not being defenders by trade, freshmen Briana Esteves and Leighann Kafel, who nearly scored a wondergoal just before halftime against Loyola Maryland, have been superb in the backline and are the two outfield players who have accumulated the most minutes played. Each of the top nine minute-getters in the squad are either freshmen or seniors (five freshmen, four seniors), emphasizing the balance of youth and experience available at the squad's ready.
Coach Teepe's Thoughts
"We are looking forward to another match against a NCAA tournament team to test where we are. They have played some strong teams to start the year just like us, so it should be an interesting match. We have shown some good things but hopefully we can improve our attacking play in these last two games before we start with a tough NEC opener vs. St. Francis."
What's Next
The Knights have one more non-conference match on their schedule, a battle with Columbia at University Stadium on Sunday, September 12, at 1 p.m., before NEC play begins the next weekend.
