WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Junior Marina Burzaco scored twice in the second half, but Monmouth's (2-1-2) late penalty kick forced a 2-2 draw with FDU (0-2-2) on Sunday afternoon at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn.
The opening 45 minutes saw both teams create chances, but neither side was able to find the back of the net. FDU registered six shots in the opening half, including an early attempt from Burzaco that struck the crossbar in the 10th minute. Rosemarie Leblanc made two saves before halftime to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard.
Monmouth broke through in the 65th minute when Saar van der Boom headed home a pass from Maddie DeMaio and Evangeline Perdomo to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
The Knights quickly responded.
Just over four minutes later, Maria Barrero found Burzaco, who finished her chance in the 69th minute to level the match at 1-1. The goal marked Burzaco's first of the afternoon and her second of the season.
FDU continued to pressure the Monmouth defense as the second half progressed. In the 85th minute, Allison Nase connected with Burzaco, who found the back of the net for the second time to give the Knights a 2-1 lead.
The Hawks would not go quietly, however, as Monmouth earned a penalty kick with less than a minute remaining in regulation. Ashley Lavrich converted from the spot in the 90th minute to tie the contest at 2-2.
FDU finished the afternoon with 15 shots, six of which were on target. Burzaco led all Knights with seven shots and three shots on goal. Leblanc recorded five saves in the FDU goal.
The Knights held a 2-1 advantage for the final five minutes of regulation before Monmouth's equalizer. FDU and Monmouth combined for 35 shots and eight saves in the contest.
