Knights Beat Bears 2-0; Hoekstra Sets Program Record for Goals

Box Score

GREELEY, Colo. – Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central) scored twice and became Fairleigh Dickinson all-time leader in goals as the Knights beat Northern Colorado 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

"Today was definitely a team day. We used everyone we could", said head coach Eric Teepe. "We had a couple of chances in the first half that we did not convert, but we came out in the first 25 minutes of the second and created quality chances."

After a scoreless first half, Hoekstra converted on a penalty kick in the 47th minute to give Fairleigh Dickinson (3-3) a 1-0 lead. The goal was her 23rd of her career and established a new program record.

"Rachel wanted to take the penalty kick and I think that sparked her confidence that lead to her second goal", said Teepe.

Less than five minutes later Hoekstra doubled the Knights' lead with her third of the season to make it 2-0. Adrienne Jordan of Northern Colorado (4-2) tried to respond and cut the lead in half, but Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) was there to make the save.

The Bears best chance came when they earned a penalty kick in the 74th minute. Sydney Schroeder attempted the PK, but Burr was there to make one of her five saves. The Bears then had a corner and Burr was there again to stop both Paige Morris and Sydney Schroeder. Off the rebound from Schroeder's chance, Jordan took a shot that hit the crossbar.

Jordan's chance was the last of the game for the Bears as the Knights' defense did not allow another look at goal to hold on for Fairleigh Dickinson's first clean sheet of the season. The shutout is Burr's fifth of her career.

Teepe added, "This game was the first time our defense was compact throughout the game. It is a big step forward for us. We had been giving up a lot of goals but getting this result will give us a lot of confidence moving forward".

Fairleigh Dickinson returns to the pitch next Sunday, September 13 when they travel to Stony Brook. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
