Box Score 2 SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Bryant on Saturday afternoon. The Knights (17-22, 8-11 NEC) and Bulldogs (23-20, 14-5 NEC) will complete the series with a single game on Sunday.
GAME ONE – BRY 14, FDU 4The Knights dropped the opening game of the doubleheader by a score of 14-4 as Bryant exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third inning and then added three in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
FDU also had a strong third inning scoring four runs to take the lead, but it was quickly erased by the Bulldogs.
Freshman
Bobby Romano (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan ) doubled to open the third and senior
Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) reached on a wild pitch third strike. A double by sophomore
Matt McCann (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro ) scored Romano and sent Siebler to third. One batter later, McCann and Siebler scored on a two-run double by senior
Riley Moonan (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero North). Moonan would eventually come around to score on a single by junior
Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford).
McCann, Moonan and Romano each had two hits in the game. Roman's single was the seventh hit of the game for FDU. Bryant posted 14 hits in the game.
Senior
Joe Borelli (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan ) pitched 3.2 innings and surrendered 10 runs, seven earned. He allowed nine hits and three walks, but did strike out seven. He falls to 2-5 on the season with the loss.
Seniors
Anthony Calise (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and
Yonah Perline (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Dominic) pitched the remainder of the game with Perline tossing a scoreless sixth inning.
James Karinchak improved to 7-4 with the victory for Bryant.
GAME TWO – BRY 6, FDU 5The Knights opened the second game with a pair of runs in the first inning. McCann walked and stole second before scoring on a two-out single by junior
Patrick McClure (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius ). Roman would follow with a double to right center to score McClure and give FDU a 2-0 lead.
However, the Bulldogs would answer with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first of FDU starter
Ryan McGrath (Lansingburgh, N.Y./Lansingburgh).
McGrath would surrender and additional run in the bottom of the second, but then settled in and kept the Bulldogs from scoring again through the sixth inning.
FDU cut the deficit to 4-3 on a bases loaded walk by Roman in the fifth and then tied the game on a solo home run in the sixth Giakas in the sixth.
The Knights grabbed the lead for good in the seventh as freshman
Jason Fatzinger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to score the go ahead run.
Senior
Eric Snyder (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) came on to close out the seventh, but surrendered two runs on two hits and two walks. He did not record an out in the seventh. Snyder allowed a leadoff double then walked a batter and intentionally walked a batter. With bases loaded and no outs he surrendered a walk off two run double to Bryant's John Mullen. He falls to 4-2 on the season with the loss.
James Davitt earned the victory in relief for the Bulldogs.
Junior
Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) and Giakas each had two hits in the game for the Knights.
