Three Goals in Four Minutes Lift Knights Past Pioneers

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Three goals in a span of four minutes in the first half got the Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team out of a 1-0 hole against Sacred Heart and helped the Knights pick up a 4-2 win at Sacred Heart.

"We came out flat and gave them an easy goal. Then we went on fire", said head coach Eric Teepe postgame. "We did a good job of recognizing areas that we could exploit and did it repeatedly. We also had four or five clear chances outside of the four goals."

The Knights surrendered a goal inside the first 95 seconds to go down 1-0 quickly but then responded with their run. Elma Kolenovic (Manhattan, N.Y./NYC Lab) got the run going when she deposited a rebound off a Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central) shot into the open goal at 13:48. The goal was the freshman's second of the season.

Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central) got Fairleigh Dickinson (8-5, 2-0 NEC) ahead less than two minutes later at 15:37 when she put a shot past Talia Schwartz in the Sacred Heart (3-8, 0-2 NEC) goal. Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) provided the assist.

Jessi Reinhardt (Friedberg, Germany/Burggymansium) got on to the scoresheet when she scored less than two minutes after Hoekstra at 17:17 scored to increase the Knights' lead to 3-1.

Hoekstra then added her second of the game and fourth in her last two games in the 27th minute when Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) found her behind the Pioneer defense inside the area for the goal. The redshirt-junior now has 10 goals on the season.

The four goals in the first half are the most the Knights have scored in a half since scoring four in each half of an 8-0 win over Saint Peter's last season.

Dana Cosmedy got one back for the Pioneers in the 56th minute when she controlled a cross from Lindsay Corallo. After the goal, Sacred heart was able to sustain some possession in the Fairleigh Dickinson defensive third but no shots in the minutes following.

"Defensively, we were all hands on deck after it became 4-2", said Teepe.

Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) made a save on Lindsay Corallo with another Pioneer waiting for the potential rebound in the 74th minute. Two minutes later Sacred Heart had another chance to score, as a header hit the crossbar then went straight down and hit the line before Burr controlled it. Burr made five saves to earn her eighth win of the year and 24th of her career.

Fairleigh Dickinson returns to the pitch next Sunday, October 11when they host Central Connecticut at 12 p.m. at University Stadium.
