Box Score TEANECK, N.J. –
Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central) scored her seventh and eighth goals of the season to help Fairleigh Dickinson open Northeast Conference play with a win over Mount St. Mary's on Friday night, in the pouring rain, at University Stadium.
The win is the Knights' fifth straight at home and third straight overall. The five straight wins at home tie the longest streak in program history.
"Tonight was a good way to start the NEC schedule", said Head Coach
Eric Teepe. "We played a pretty complete game and I never felt we were chasing the game. Halfway through the second half we were able to rest some players and hopefully that pays dividends on Sunday."
Hoekstra got Fairleigh Dickinson (7-5, 1-0 NEC) on the board in the 24th minute when she cleaned up a rebound off a shot from
Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) inside eight yards from goal. The Bowmanville, Ontario native struck again in the 38th minute after she took a pass from
Katey Arathoon (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's ) and beat Rachel Bourne in the Mount St. Mary's (1-11, 0-1 NEC) goal from outside the 18.
Fairleigh Dickinson was looking to extend the lead early in half number two, but Bourne made a save on Kolenovic and two on Hoekstra to keep the Mountaineers in the game.
Arden Sulit had an opportunity to get The Mount back within one, but
Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) made the save in the 70th minute. Burr made all five saves she needed too to earn the win and the shutout, her fourth.
Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) put the game out of reach in the 82nd minute when
Esther Rochon (Saint Romuald, Quebec/College Francois-Xavier-Garneau) played in a ball to Tice behind the Mountaineer defense then Tice put it away for her eighth of the season. Her eight goals lead the team and the NEC.
The Knights will look to extend the winning streak to four when they travel to Sacred Heart on Sunday.
