Kristina Neri (San Jose, Calif./Santa Teresa) and
Elma Kolenovic (Manhattan, N.Y./NYC Lab) combined on a give-and-go with 37 seconds to play in double overtime to get Fairleigh Dickinson a 1-0 win over Central Connecticut on Sunday afternoon. The Knights have now won five straight, which ties a program record, and the Knights are now a perfect 6-0 at home this season.
"It was one of those games that you have two teams that are vying for the top in the league and we knew it was going to be a battle", said head coach
Eric Teepe. "We did a good job of limiting their chances and [Central Connecticut's Nicki Turley] played an excellent game. Christina is a player that has a lot of pace and will run at you and Elma did a great job by playing the ball back to Neri in behind."
Neri's goal was her first of the season. The sophomore defender made a run down the right side prior to playing the ball to Kolenovic to who found Neri on the right edge of the six-yard box when she beat Nicki Turlley to the far left post. Kolenovic now has five assists on the season to lead the team.
Neri said postgame, "This win was huge for us. We knew going in it was going to be tough." She continued, "It feels good to get the winning goal. It was a huge team effort throughout. We want to carry this momentum going forward against LIU Brooklyn and through the rest of the season."
Fairleigh Dickinson (9-5, 3-0 NEC) was able to put six shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes and eight on the afternoon. The best chance came from
Patricia Seitz (Pfungstadt, Germany/Baden-Wurttemberg), whose header from a free-kick went wide of the right post. Central Connecticut (5-3-3, 1-1-1 NEC) got only two shots away in the half, but none challenged
Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) in the Knight goal.
The Knights came out of halftime pressing in the Blue Devil defensive third but could not get a shot on frame. In the 61st minute,
Kayla Adams (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering ) played in a free kick that
Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) headed towards goal and forced Turley to fingertip-save going to her right to keep the game scoreless.
Central Connecticut had a chance to take the lead in the 76th minute when Laura Casanovas Dias took a shot through a crowd that Burr saved with her leg. Burr made two saves to record her fifth shutout of the season.
Seitz then had a chance on Fairleigh Dickinson's ensuing counter, but she was denied by Turley.

Giselles Perez (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) hit the crossbar then
Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) put a shot over the goal off a pass from Kolenovic.
