W. Soccer Downs Rider, 3-2, in OT Victory

Box Score

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. --  The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team defeated Rider, 3-2, in the first overtime period thanks to Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's )'s golden goal in the 94th minute on Friday evening at Ben Cohen field. With the victory, the Knights improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Broncs fall to 1-1 overall.

"We felt that we controlled play for most of tonight's game," Head Coach Eric Teepe said, "We allowed a couple of mistakes that allowed them back into the match, but it was great to see us to pick up our game immediately at the start of overtime and put the game away quickly."

FDU was just two minutes from entering the halftime interval with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from junior Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ), off a Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) corner kick, and sophomore Connie Lewis (Outer Cove, Newfoundland/Gonzaga )' second goal in as many games, after an assist from junior Esther Rochon (Saint Romuald, Quebec/College Francois-Xavier-Garneau). However, the Knights allowed Broncs' midfielder Tara Ballay to find the back of the net just before the halftime whistle.

That score would hold for the next 43 minutes before Ballay scored her second of the contest with just two minutes to play to eventually force extra time.

Just minutes after extra time began, co-captain Goulet won the ball in midfield, dribbled past two defenders, and slotted her shot at the back post from just beyond the top of the box for the golden-goal winner, her first of the campaign after leading the Knights in goals scored last season with five.

As a team, FDU outshot the Broncs, 24-6, including 10 from 2013 NEC All-Rookie selection Lewis. Junior goalkeeper Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville ) finished with three saves to earn her second victory of the season between the pipes.

"Tonight was a great learning experience for us," Teepe said. "Being able to manage a game when we're ahead and to also find a way to win under pressure is definitely something that we can grow with."

The Knights are on the road again Sunday, Aug. 31 with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Delaware State in Dover, Del.
