Box Score MILWAUKEE – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team dropped its final contest of the Marquette Invitational, 3-1, to Loyola Chicago on Sunday. With the victory, the Ramblers improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 1-1 overall.
"The result was a little disappointing because we had the majority of chances in the match and we should have been up at halftime," Head Coach
Eric Teepe said. "We allowed the other team to really control the ball on 50-50's and that was ultimately our downfall."
The Knights were unlucky to find themselves down 2-0 after 52 minutes. FDU had outshot Loyola, 9-2, in the first half and forced senior goalkeeper Monica Gonyo to make three saves.
The second half was much of the same, with FDU registering eight shots for a total of 17 over 90 minutes while forcing Gonyo into making an additional two saves. The Knights also tallied 10 corner kicks to the Ramblers' four, including three towards the end of the match with a couple of clear-cut chances that resulted in a ball cleared off the line and a fantastic save from Gonyo.
Sophomore
Connie Lewis (Outer Cove, Newfoundland/Gonzaga ), a 2013 Northeast Conference All-Rookie selection, pulled one back for the Knights in the 80th minute with a brilliant solo effort, her first of the campaign after scoring two last season. Lewis received the ball at midfield, dribbled upfield, took on two defenders and slotted the ball in at the back post.
The Ramblers got on the board in the 19th minute when junior Kara Ruffalo made a move past a defender inside the box and fired home for the contest's first goal. Loyola freshman Avalon Senn-Raemont came off the bench and scored what would prove to be the game winner with a tap-in during the 52nd minute. Senn-Raemont would add a third for her team in the 90th minute, unassisted and against the run of play, after dribbling into FDU's box and finding the back of the net.
Lewis,
Esther Rochon (Saint Romuald, Quebec/College Francois-Xavier-Garneau),
Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville ), and
Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) were named to the All-Tournament team following the conclusion of the final match on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights will seek to get back above .500 when they travel to face Rider on Friday, Aug. 29. Kickoff in Lawrenceville, N.J. is scheduled for 5 p.m.
