W. Soccer Shuts Out Rider for 2-0 Win

Box Score

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team used a goal in each half to earn a 2-0 win over Rider University on Sunday, Sept. 9 at University Stadium.  With the win, the Knights move to 2-1 on the year, while the Broncs fall to 1-2.

Sophomore Canadian products Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) and Esther Rochon (Saint Romuald, Quebec/College Francois-Xavier-Garneau) recorded the Knights' two goals of the game to aid FDU in its efforts to move to a winning record.

The Knights took the lead early in the contest when a quick corner kick paved the way for freshman Connie Lewis (Outer Cove, Newfoundland/Gonzaga ) to cross the ball in front of the goal.  Sophomore captain Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) put the Knights ahead 1-0 with a header to the top left corner of the net.  The tally was Goulet's first goal of the season and Lewis' first assist of her collegiate career.

FDU pressed the Rider defense on several occasions through the first half, including a shot from sophomore Skyler Speed (Dover, Del./Campus Community ).  Speed's shot challenged Rider keeper, Vanessa Perdomo in the 31st minute.

The Broncs created an attack late in the half when Michelle Iacono ripped a shot that required a diving stop by Sage DoVale (Lilburn, Ga./Collins Hill).  However, Rider was unable to even the score and the Knights held onto the lead at the half.

FDU began the second half with an offensive surge.  A pass through the middle by Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) fed Esther Rochon (Saint Romuald, Quebec/College Francois-Xavier-Garneau).  Rochon's shot was stopped by Perdomo to prevent the Knights from increasing their lead.

The Broncs earned a corner kick in the 62nd minute.  Iacono headed the ball toward the goal to challenge DoVale but the senior keeper was in place to make the save.

Rider went on to challenge FDU with seven shots in the second half.  The Broncs put just two of those shots on target to remain scoreless.  Their best chance came in the 73rd minute when a close-range shot required DoVale to dive, but her effort stifled the shot attempt to maintain the shutout.

Three minutes later Rochon created a run down the left side of the field.  Rochon cut to the center of the field and beat to Rider defenders before firing a shot past the Rider keeper and into the lower left corner of the net.

The Knights maintained the lead through the remainder of the game to take the 2-0 win at home.  DoVale earned the win and her second shutout of the season.

The Knights return to action on Thursday, Sept. 5 when they take on Syracuse at the SU Soccer Stadium.  Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
