The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team suffered its worst result of the season with a 4-0 loss to Saint Joseph's University on Sunday, Sept. 18 in Philadelphia, PA. The Knights fall to an even 3-3-1 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 3-3-2.
The Hawks scored two goals in each half and held the Knights scoreless to take the win.
Mo Hawkins took FDU keeper Sage DoVale (Lilburn, Ga./Collins Hill) one-on-one in the penalty box in the 21st minute. DoVale slid to stop Hawkins' attack attempt but when the shot was deflected, Hawkins collected the rebound and shot to the right corner past a diving DoVale.
Five minutes later, Morgan Duffy accepted a cross from the right side of the box. The FDU defense was able to stop Duffy's attack in front of the net but she maneuvered to the left right and shot a low ball past DoVale.
Seniors Elizabeth Langer (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) and Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial) got off three shots before the end of the half but could not capitalize on scoring opportunities.
St. Joseph's goal keeper, Lauren Jancuska, recovered two saves in the first half, while her team took five attempted shots. DoVale made one save in the first 45 minutes and the Knights took four shots.
The Knights' midfield kept good control of the ball to begin the second half but was unable to lead an attack against the Hawks. The SJU offense recorded four shots, including one that hit the crossbar in the opening ten minutes of the second period.
In the 65th minute, the Hawks took a 3-0 lead on a play that was recorded as an own goal. The ball was deflected off an FDU defender after a shot was taken by SJU from the right side.
FDU responded with three quick shots from Lindzy Williams (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood), Lisa-Marie Curti (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux) and Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) but were still unable to get on the scoreboard.
In the 80th minute, the Hawks added their final goal of the game with a low line-drive from 20 yards outside the goal. Steph Maurer recorded her first goal of the season when the ball got past a diving DoVale.
Despite the lopsided score, the Knights recorded 10 shots, including five on goal compared to the Hawks 13 shots with six on goal.
DoVale earned her second loss of the season. Her save percentage falls to .806 in six games.
The Knights will face Northeast Conference opponent, Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY on Saturday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 pm.
