W. Soccer Defeats Manhattan, 2-1, For Second Consecutive Win

Box Score

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team created a two-game win streak with a 2-1 victory over Manhattan College on Sunday, Sept. 11, in Teaneck, NJ.  With the win the Knights improve to 2-2-1 on the season, while the Jaspers fall to 1-3.

The Knights took control of the attack right after kickoff with two quick shots including one that hit the crossbar by senior Stephanie Austin (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan).

In the sixth minute of play, senior defender Maureen O'Connell dribbled up the field before finding the feet of classmate Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial).  Sherman crossed the ball to the left side where Lindzy Williams (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood) was able to take several touches on the ball before shooting to the bottom right corner of the net.  Williams' first goal of the season put the Knights up 1-0.

After a hit crossbar by freshman Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), the Knights kept the pressure on Manhattan keeper Kara Davis with three shots in the next ten minutes.

In the 37th minute, Schiavoni took control of the ball in the penalty box.  She dribbled toward Davis in net and shot to the far right corner of the goal to put the Knights up 2-0.

The Knights outshot the Jaspers, 10-3 in the first half with three shots on goal.  Sophomore Sage DoVale (Lilburn, Ga./Collins Hill) made one save in the first half.

Three minutes into the second half the Jaspers were awarded a free-kick from 25 yards out.  Martine Diamond placed the kick just outside of the six-yard box for Manhattan.  In a commotion in front of the net, Megan Lavecchia got a touch on the ball and was able to get passed DoVale.  Lavecchia's goal brought the score to 2-1.

The Knights put the pressure back onto the Jasper defense with seven shots in the final 30 minutes of play.

With six minutes remaining in the game, Manhattan's Lexi Kearns ripped a shot directly at the FDU goal.  DoVale leaped to make the save and knocked the ball out of play to hold onto the Knights' lead.

FDU outshot Manhattan by a total of 17-5 including 5-2 with shots on goal.  DoVale picked up her second win of the season with two saves on the day.

The Knights return to action on Friday, Sept. 16, with a 4:00 pm game against St. Peter's.  The game is part of a men's-women's double header with the men's game against Yale slated for 7:00 pm.
