Rider Shuts Out Women?s Soccer Sunday

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team suffered its first, home turf setback of the 2008 campaign, falling to Rider University 2-0, Sunday, Sept. 7 at University Field.  In the two teams' first meeting since 2000, a pair of first half goals propelled the Broncs (1-3-1) to their first win of the season.

Despite out-shooting Rider, 22-8 and holding a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks, the Knights slipped to 3-2 overall.

In the 22nd minute, junior defender Kate Murphy (Holland, PA) was credited with the game-winner, after a free kick booted by sophomore midfielder Lauren Musumeci (Annandale, NJ) was redirected and grazed off an FDU defender.

“We let them come in and control things ? in the first half we were not ready to play,” Head Coach Renee Montana said.  “We gave one away today, but to Rider's credit, they came in with a game plan and executed well.  This type of effort won't get it done and we need to correct some things.”

Broncs' freshman forward Jordan Bunch (Jackson, NJ) netted the unassisted insurance marker in the 33rd minute.  Fairleigh Dickinson senior goalkeeper Rachel Derrico (/Canon McMillan) (Canonsburg, PA) stopped a shot, with Bunch heading the rebound past the net minder.  Knights' sophomore defender Lisa-Marie Curti (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux) (Richmond Hill, Ontario) prevented a score with a save, a header, on the goal line.  However, Bunch returned the clearance another header, this one slipping under the crossbar.

Derrico worked 45 minutes, making three saves, but fell to 3-1 on the year.  Junior goalie Megan MacKellar (/Brookwood) (Lilburn, GA) logged a scoreless second stanza, including a pair of stops.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, PA) registered 13 saves for Rider.

Fairleigh Dickinson takes on the University of Nevada ? Las Vegas at noon, Friday, Sept. 12.  The contest will be played in Albuquerque, NM, as part of the Nike Classic.
