The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team fell, 3-2, at Monmouth University, Sunday, Oct. 5. The Knights (4-7-0 overall, 1-1 Northeast Conference) took a 2-0 advantage into halftime; however, the Hawks (9-1-1 overall) improved to 2-0 in league play, on the strength of a tandem of second half goals.
Senior midfielder Joanna DeMoor headed home the deciding tally four minutes into overtime ? her second goal of the afternoon ? with freshman forward Courtney Snyder providing the cross into the box.
“This will be a tough one to take,” Head Coach Renee Montana said. “We were able to take a two-goal lead into the half and fought hard to keep that lead in the second half.
Fairleigh Dickinson grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when forward Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial) netted an unassisted goal after the freshman's cross caromed off an MU defender. In the 42nd minute, junior midfielder Lora Lehr (Rosemere, Quebec/Villa Maria) gained a breakaway and finished following a 1-on-1 opportunity. Sherman's capitalization marked her sixth goal of the season, landing her third in the conference.
The defending NEC champion Hawks finally got on the board in the 75th minute, with a throw-in courtesy of sophomore midfielder Mary Wilks sparking the surge. Junior midfielder Alessandra DeTata's one touch scoring strike punctuated the play.
“It came down to staying smart and composed, but with 18 minute to play, we couldn't close the door,” Montana said. “We'll have to find a way to put this past us and learn from it as well.”
DeMoor's run down the right side resulted in an unassisted equalizer in the 89th minute.
FDU junior goalkeeper Megan MacKellar (/Brookwood) registered four saved in the loss. Conversely, Hawks' sophomore goalie Lia Fierro tallied a tandem of saves.
The Knights host Wagner College at 3:00 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10 at University Field in Teaneck, NJ.
