The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team notched its second-straight victory, downing Lafayette College, 3-0, Sunday, Sept. 30 in Easton, PA. Senior forward Tonya Hipsman (/Chester) (Chester, NY) tallied the game-winner in the 60th minute and assisted on the Knights' third goal, as FDU moved to 2-7 overall.
Hipsman corralled a cross from the left side by sophomore midfielder Christine Niven (/Middleboro) (Middleboro, MA) to take a 1-0 advantage. Junior defender Emma Yamada (/LaSalle Academy) (Saunderstown, RI) added an insurance goal in the 87th minute, going near post, following a through ball by sophomore defender Emma Howes (Avalon Beach, Sydney, Australia/Barranjoey) (Avalon Beach, Australia).
“We played very well today ? I'm proud of the effort,” Head Coach Renee Montana said. “We had our game plan and implemented it, with a couple kids coming out and stepping up their individual games, particularly Rachel. This is a great way to go into conference matches.”
Yamada struck again in the 90th minute, tapping home her second goal, with Hipsman providing the feed.
Junior goalkeeper Rachel Derrico (/Canon McMillan) (Canonsburg, PA) collected five saves in net.
Following the shutout, the Leopards (2-8) losing streak reached five games.
Hipsman moved into a tie for third-place all-time with her fourth score of the season ? 14th of her career.
Fairleigh Dickinson opens Northeast Conference action at 3:00 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5, taking on St. Francis University in Loretto, PA.
