The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team defeated Mount St. Mary's University, 3-1, Sunday, Oct. 14 in Teaneck, NJ. Three Knights tallied their first goals of the season, as FDU improved to 2-2 in the Northeast Conference and 4-10 overall.
The Knights capitalized early, with sophomore midfielder Christine Niven (/Middleboro) (Middleboro, MA/Middleboro) driving home a rebound off sophomore midfielder Emma Howes (Avalon Beach, Sydney, Australia/Barranjoey)' (Avalon Beach - Sydney, Australia/Barrenjoey/Fairfield University) initial attempt in the 15th minute.
Fairleigh Dickinson jumped ahead 2-0 when junior midfielder Emma Yamada (/LaSalle Academy) (Saunderstown, RI/LaSalle Academy) corralled a loose ball and passed to surging midfielder Michelle DeCourcey (/Fredericton) (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Fredericton). The senior blasted the ball under the bar in the 39th minute.
Just more than a minute later, the Knights grabbed a 3-0 advantage when sophomore midfielder Lora Lehr (Rosemere, Quebec/Villa Maria) (Rosemere, Quebec/Villa Maria/Dawson College) converted a cross from senior defender Amanda Wheeler (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee).
The Mount (3-10, 1-3 NEC) cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 44th minute when senior midfielder Karyn Farrar (Mount Airy, MD South Carroll) connected to junior midfielder Erin Canning (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) for a one-timer.
“It was important to get a win today,” Head Coach Renee Montana said. “We need to play 90 minutes and today we moved closer to that goal. Next weekend brings two big games, so we'll tweak a few things and keep working on our focus of consistency.”
Junior goalkeeper Rachel Derrico (/Canon McMillan) (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillian) made three saves in the victory. Senior goalkeeper Anna Lebo (Walkersville, MD/Walkersville) took the loss, despite nine saves.
Fairleigh Dickinson travels to Brooklyn, NY, Friday, Oct. 19 at 6:00 p.m. to clash with Long Island University.
