Women's Soccer Defeated by Monmouth, 3-1

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team lost, 3-1, against Monmouth University, Friday, Oct. 12 in Teaneck, NJ. Senior forward Tonya Hipsman (/Chester) (Chester, NY/Chester) tallied her fifth goal of the season, as the Knights slipped to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the Northeast Conference.

The Hawks (7-2-3 overall, 3-0 NEC) struck first, as junior midfielder Joni DeMoor (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) scored in the 28th minute.   Sophomore forward Andrea Lopez (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Township) took a pass from sophomore midfielder BrieAnne Nomejko (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) at midfield then worked a give-and-go with DeMoor, who ran onto open field and finished the play off just inside the box.

FDU fired right back with Hipsman one-timing the equalizer 66 seconds later.  Senior defender Alex White (/Lynnfield) (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield) started the play with an outlet down the right side to senior midfielder Michelle DeCourcey (/Fredericton) (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Fredericton) who fed Hipsman just outside the six-yard box.

In the 42nd minute, Monmouth notched the game-winner, as Lopez shifted a square ball to senior midfielder Amy Hoyer (Chesterfield, NJ/Northern Burlington).  Hoyer teed up an attempt from 35 yards out and deposited a wind-aided effort in the upper right corner.

“In the first-half we gave ourselves chances and almost tied it, but Monmouth came up with some key stops,” Head Coach Renee Montana said.  “We came out flat in the second-half and didn't give ourselves a chance.  It's unacceptable ? against good teams you can't just give up.”

Hoyer added an insurance marker in the 50th minute with a far post strike.  DeMoor and junior forward Illiana Blackshear (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) recorded assists on the play.

Knights' junior goalkeeper Rachel Derrico (/Canon McMillan) (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillian) took the loss, despite registering a career-high 10 saves through 90 minutes.

Fairleigh Dickinson hosts Mount St. Mary's University at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14.
