Women's Volleyball Falls to Youngstown State, Defeats St. Francis PA

TOLEDO, OH - The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's volleyball team (5-7) opened competition at the Toledo Tournament with a 3-2 loss to Youngstown State (5-3), but bounced back to defeat St. Francis PA (1-7), 3-1.

In the first game against Youngstown State, the Knights won by a closely battled score of 31-29. The Knights took the second game, 30-20, but dropped the next two 30-26 and 30-20. The tie-breaking fifth game was close, but Youngstown State took the match with a 15-12 win.

Sophomore Elena Schmidt led the Knights with 19 kills. Sophomore Ruth Levy recorded 51 assists and freshman Karolina Kowalski had team-highs with three aces and 18 digs. Sophomore Lauren Lombardo notched 17 digs while Levy and Schmidt each had 13. Sophomore Rebecca Tenney kept up her strong defense with five block assists.

Against the Red Flash, the Knights jumped out to an early lead, winning the first game, 30-27. St. Francis PA won the second game, 30-26, but the Knights sealed the win with dominating performances in the next two games, winning by scores of 30-21 and 31-29.

Schmidt again led the Knights with 21 kills, posting a double-double with 18 digs. Freshman Megan Philbrick recorded 13 kills. Levy had 48 assists and freshman Lauren Boothby had three blocks. Lombardo notched a team-high 19 digs, while Kowalski contributed 16.

The Knights continue competition at the Toledo Tournament on Saturday, against Chicago State at 10:00 am and closing it out against host Toledo at 3:00 p.m.
