FDU Appoints Amable Martinez as Next Women's Volleyball Head Coach

HACKENSACK, N.J. – FDU Senior Associate VP/Director of Athletics Bradford Hurlbut announced the hire of new Head Women's Volleyball Coach Amable Martinez on Tuesday afternoon.

"We are incredibly excited to announce Amable as our next Head Women's Volleyball Coach," said Hurlbut.  "To land someone who has such a wealth of experience and success provides us with a tremendous opportunity to build upon the unprecedented growth that FDU volleyball has experienced in the last four years.  I look forward to watching Amable lead our program to even greater heights in the years to come."

Martinez takes over a Knights program that has been a consistent competitor in the NEC. FDU has qualified for the NEC tournament in each of the past four seasons, making the championship match in three of those years. The Knights have won ten NEC games in each of the last four seasons.

"It is an honor to be named the new Head Women's Volleyball Coach at FDU and amazing to be back in NEC," said Martinez. "I am so grateful to Brad Hurlbut and Jason Young along with the rest hiring committee for believing in my vision and allowing this Jersey boy to return home to lead the Knights volleyball program to continued success. Looking forward to bringing my drive and passion to the student-athletes here, to provide them with an enhanced student-athlete experience and shared vision of success on and off the court. Can't wait to get started!"

The latest stop for Martinez was as the Head Women's Volleyball Coach at Moravian College.

Prior to Moravian, Martines spent seven seasons as a head coach in the NEC. Martinez' latest stop was as the Head Women's Volleyball Coach at LIU, a position which he served from 2023 to 2025. Under Martinez, the Sharks were 2023 NEC Tournament Champions, earning a spot in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Martinez coached both the NEC Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Year and NEC Defensive Player of the Year during his tenure in Brooklyn.

Prior to his stint at LIU, Martinez was the head coach of St. Francis College - Brooklyn, from 2019 to 2023. Martinez finished his tenure as the all-time wins leader in Terrier history, and twice set the single-season wins mark for the school. Under Martinez' leadership, the Terriers were in the top 20% academically in the nation according to the AVCA, and finished as an All-Academic team multiple times.

Prior to his NEC coaching jobs, Martinez was the head coach of Saint Peter's women's volleyball program from 2017 to 2019. At the same time, Martinez handled duties as the Lead Assistant Men's Volleyball Coach for Stevens Institute of Technology. At Stevens, Martinez helped lead a program that was a 2017 National Semifinalist, and the 2018 National Runner-up. Martinez coached 7 AVCA All-Americans during his tenure at Stevens.

Martinez' first collegiate head coaching gig came at Bloomfield College, where he was the Head Women's Volleyball Coach from 2012 to 2017. At Bloomfield, Martinez led the Bears to the 2015 CACC Co-Conference Regular Season Championship, and coached six All-CACC players.
