WASHINGTON, D.C. – FDU women's lacrosse (7-5, 3-1) outlasted Howard (2-9, 1-3) by a score of 8-7 on Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now two games over .500 in NEC play for the first time in the program's young history.
FDU fell behind 2-0 early in the first quarter, but a goal from
Jenny Spencer cut the deficit in half before the period ended.
Karly Dillabough came out firing in the second quarter. She scored two goals in the span of two minutes to give FDU their first lead at 3-2.
Riley Eaton then capitalized on a free position attempt to extend their advantage. After Howard answered with a goal of their own,
Nora Codianni made it a 5-3 game with her 26
th tally of the season. The Bison equalized the game heading into halftime with two goals in the final minutes.
Howard scored the first goal of the second half to take a 6-5 lead. They held FDU scoreless for nearly ten minutes to open up the period. However, the Knights' offense came alive and took control of the game. Dillabough completed her hat-trick with a free position goal to tie the game. Freshman
Mia Layne then struck for two-straight goals to put FDU ahead 8-6 heading into the fourth.
The fourth period was a defensive battle with neither team finding much success offensively. Howard finally scored with less than two minutes to play, which drew them within one. In the final minute, Howard's chances to tie the game were thwarted by two
Skylar Goodman saves. This allowed FDU to hang on for the victory.
Dillabough's three goals extended her goal-streak to five games. She has scored 12 goals in this span and sits at 21 tallies on the year.
FDU's goalkeepers made 12 saves in the contest. Goodman was excellent in net. She entered at halftime and made seven saves on ten shots.
FDU will host Stonehill next Saturday, April 4, in Teaneck. Both teams enter the game with 3-1 records in league play. First draw control is set for 12 p.m. on NEC Front Row.
