HACKENSACK, N.J. - The Knights (10-11, 3-5) are headed to the NEC Tournament after defeating D'Youville (6-14, 0-5) 3-0 and clinching the four-seed. FDU honored eight seniors, six of which were original members of the program and set the foundation for years to come.
The win marked FDU's second victory over D'Youville this weekend. Last night the Saints were able to take a set, but FDU was able to manage a clean sweep this afternoon.
Fittingly, it was two FDU senior's that led the charge offensively.
Artem Vetrov had 13 kills, while
Jack Lydon produced 12 of his own. Senior setter
Jose Angarita directed the offense to the tune of 33 assists.
Despite Vetrov and Lydon putting up the most kills, it was a well-rounded effort for an FDU offense that hit over .300. Conversely, they were able to hold D'Youville to a pedestrian .146 hitting percentage. This was helped by five team blocks and eight digs from
Grady Hoffman.
Despite a late D'Youville charge, it was a comfortable first set for the Knights. They jumped out to an 18-9 lead and won the set, 25-18. FDU fell behind early in set two, but quickly erased the deficit with a 4-0 run to put them ahead 7-5. D'Youville never led again as FDU won the set 25-18 again. The third set was the closest of the day. FDU trailed 22-21, before winning the next four points to win the set and seal the sweep.
FDU will face Merrimack to close out the regular season for two matches on beginning on Friday, April 18, with first serve at 5 p.m.
