STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – FDU's (8-5-4, 8-0-1) eight-match winning streak came to an end in a 1-1 draw at Wagner (6-2-6, 5-1-2) on Thursday night. The Knights ten-match point streak did remain intact.
"It was a good game," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "We play two different styles which makes it fantastic to watch. I think it probably deserved to be a tie. We had very good chances at the end, but they had chances themselves."
After Wagner put the Knights on their heels to start the match, FDU broke open the scoring in the 29
th minute.
Marina Burzaco put a wonderful touch on a cross from
Andrea Ougaard that setup
Elena Cvetkovic. The Serbian sophomore found the back of the net for her first goal of 2025. Burzaco recorded her NEC leading eighth assist of the season on the goal.
FDU produced three shots on goal in the first half and led 1-0 heading into the break.
While Wagner had just two shots on goal in the second half, they made one of them count. In the 71
st minute after the Knights failed to clear a corner kick, the Seahawks pounced on a loose ball and equalized the match.
FDU had several chances after that to take the lead, including a Burzaco shot in the 85
th minute that was stopped by the diving Wagner keeper. She also backheeled a ball towards goal in the 89
th minute that slid just left.
"Normally when they [Wagner] gets that goal they keep coming," added Teepe. "But I think after the goal, we actually played our best soccer. We had four great chances at the end there, the ball just didn't go in."
At the end of 90 minutes, FDU outshot Wagner 17-5 with seven of the shots coming on goal.
The Knights are on the road next Thursday, October 30, at LIU. The match is set for a 12 p.m. start and will air on NEC Front Row.
