HACKENSACK, N.J.- FDU Cheerleading competed in the NCA College Cheer Camp in Loyola Md. Cheerleading camp. While competing at the camp, the team secured a bid to the National Cheer Association Finals in Daytona Beach, Fla.
"This was a great experience to be amongst some of the competition that we will see at NCA Nationals in Daytona," head coach Crystal Simmons said. "Then to have a team that is fairly all new, it was an exciting feeling for them to experience this for the first time as a team. We were really excited to see how they hold up against the competition."
Competing in camps such as the one in Baltimore, expose a young cheerleading group to the competition they will see at nationals. The squad is returning just five members of last year's unit, but thanks to a concerted recruiting effort, they currently boast a squad of 18 cheerleaders.
"This is the first year that we have had an extensive amount of talent come into the program," added Simmons.
The camp exposed the squad to a lot of new material that they will use on basketball gamedays at FDU.
"Overall, it was a great experience, I was very proud of how they overcame those obstacles and frustration and put it all together in the end to get a bid to Nationals because that is ultimately what we go to camp for," Simmons stated about the camp.
