TEANECK, N.J.- The Knights women's soccer team (0-5) played Hofstra (2-2) today, at University Stadium. FDU got out to a very early lead scoring in the first minute but could not hold onto the one goal advantage in the second half.
The Knights got off to a very positive start scoring within 40 seconds of the first whistle. Graduate student Naemi Hausen received an inch perfect cross from junior Kiomy Luperon which was shot on target but saved. Freshman Ana Salas used her instincts to be in the right spot at the right time and was able to pounce on the rebound to tap the ball into the net for her first collegiate goal.
As the first half went on the Knights kept pushing for an insurance goal but couldn't come by the illusive final touch to find the back of the net.
Freshman keeper Marie Jakobsen came up huge in the 25' when she came off her line and made an incredible one on one save to keep the Knights in the lead heading into the halftime break.
The Hofstra Pride started the second half in good form recording nine shots within the first 15'. Hofstra finally found their breakthrough in the 67' when Wiktoria Fronc calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net on a breakaway. Hofstra kept their foot on the gas and scored just seven minutes later in the 74'. Sasha McTiffin received a cross from Wiktoria Fronc and put the ball into the back of the net with a classy first-time finish which Jakobsen had no chance of saving.
Jakobsen was the star of the show tonight making 12 saves in the game and 9 in the final 45 minutes of play. The keeper pulled off some spectacular saves including three one on one saves which kept the Knights in the match.
"I think we came out strong, obviously scoring an early goal helps a lot but the biggest problem for us was scoring that second goal. We had a couple chances to find the second goal but when you play against a team with that type of quality and you don't put them away it leaves the door open for them to turn it around." Teepe continued, "Marie was very solid today, we know what she can do between those goal posts and it's exciting because she is only going to get better."
The Knights head to Newark, N.J. to face NJIT on Sunday (9/3) in what will be their third game in seven days. The squad will look to quickly recover from this match so they can come out with intensity and passion to show what this team is made of.
