NEWARK, N.J.- The Knights (0-6) faced NJIT (3-1-2) today at Lubetkin Field. FDU got out to an early lead and doubled their advantage in the second half but could not keep the Highlanders from scoring as the Knights suffered their sixth straight loss.
1st Half
Just 2' into the match the Knights were fortunate to be awarded a penalty for a handball that occurred inside the box. Graduate student Naemi Hausen stepped up to the spot with confidence and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season which gave the Knights an early 1-0 lead.
As the half went on FDU continued to play positive soccer but could not find a breakthrough for an insurance goal.
NJIT put heavy pressure on the Knights throughout the half with eight shots but only forced freshman keeper Marie Jakobsen to make one save.
2nd half
The Knights were able to capitalize on their good start to the second half by scoring an insurance goal in the 52'. Junior Kiomy Luperon received a pass from Hausen at the top of the box and was able to quickly turn and finish leaving the NJIT keeper hopeless as the ball was placed perfectly over her head.
NJIT was down two goals, but this did not stop them from keeping the pressure and intensity up. Just four minutes after going down two goals NJIT found their breakthrough with Caroline Caputo in the 56'. Caputo found herself at the end of a set piece taking one touch and finding the back of the net giving NJIT hope in the match.
Just one minute later the Highlanders leveled the match through Ciara Adams who was unmarked at the back post. Adams was able to put the ball past Jakobsen with a first-time finish in the 57' leaving it all to play for in the final 30' of the match.
The Highlanders had full control of momentum and took the lead in the 77'. Maria Nogueira finished off the NJIT counterattack by rolling the ball into the open net to give NJIT the lead.
"Simply put, we gave that game away. We were up 2-0 and should've done a better job of keeping the ball but right now we are giving the ball away in bad spots, not working hard enough, and not playing as a team." Stated Coach Teepe" There is no excuse for this, we have had the lead in each of the past two games and to give up the lead in the fashion we have in both games is extremely frustrating."
The Knights head to Pittsburgh, Pa. to face Duquesne (2-4) on Thursday, September 7th. FDU will look to avoid starting 0-7 and turn around their fortunes to find some momentum before NEC play starts.
