BRIDGEWATER, N.J. - Pushing the Knights to 2-0 this past week and a 3-0 start in Northeast Conference play, FDU men's basketball graduate student guard
Demetre Roberts (Mount Vernon, N.Y./St. Thomas Aquinas) earns himself NEC Co-Player of the Week honors, announced Monday afternoon by the conference office.
Roberts, now a two-time NEC Player of the Week this season, shares the honors with Saint Francis U's Josh Cohen with the pair previously splitting the award on December 12.
Averaging 17.7 points per NEC game through his first three conference contests, the five-foot-eight Roberts scored 45 points in two appearances with one start with FDU notching double-digit wins over St. Francis Brooklyn and LIU. Posting identical marks of eight made field goals in each contest, the key part of
Tobin Anderson's backcourt shot 53.3 percent from the field (16-for-30) for 22.5 points per game last week. Roberts contributed three-of-four shooting from behind the arc in FDU's 101-89 win over the Sharks (75 percent) while finishing with a two-game total of 42.9 percent. FDU would go on to finish with the fourth-most made three-pointers in a game in program history with a total of 14.
Perfect from the charity stripe in Saturday's (Jan. 7) contest, Roberts shot 9-for-9 against LIU when sent to the line and recorded one free throw against the Terriers on January 5. Averaging five assists a game, the Mount Vernon, N.Y. product and St. Thomas Aquinas transfer also nabbed three rebounds and two steals. The Knights' leading scorer, Roberts' 28 points against LIU set a new FDU career best as he came off the bench for 30 minutes of action. FDU is now off to their best conference start since the 2016-17 season.
Joining Roberts in earning NEC recognition are sophomore forward
Ansley Almonor (Spring Valley, N.Y./Our Savior Lutheran) and fellow fifth-year guard
Grant Singleton (Sumter, S.C./St. Thomas Aquinas) with the trio earning Prime Performer recognition. Almonor was nearly perfect from distance against the Terriers, shooting 6-of-7 for a 20-point outing in the Burgundy and Blue's first road win of the season. Singleton recorded a double-double at home against LIU with 19 points and 11 assists.
FDU hits the road for two league showdowns this weekend, first heading to New Britain, Conn. to face Central Connecticut on Saturday, January 14 at 1 p.m. followed by the Knights' first-ever trip to Stonehill to face the new NEC member Skyhawks at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 16.
