HACKENSACK, N.J. - With the academic year winding down and summer in sight across the collegiate landscape, new FDU men's basketball head coach
Tobin Anderson has continued filling the ranks of his first Knights' roster. First welcoming two graduate transfers from his previous spot of St. Thomas Aquinas (NCAA Division II - ECC) in Demetre Roberts and Grant Singleton, Anderson has inked three more student-athletes who will don the Burgundy and Blue come this fall, having added
Heru Bligen,
Jo'el Emanuel and
Kerwin Prince.
Coming to FDU with two years of Division I ball experience, Bligen spent his first two seasons at Longwood (NCAA Division I - SoCon) where the Glenn Dale, Md. resident averaged 5.04 points and 2.21 rebounds per game in 52 contests. The 6'3 point guard played in nearly 890 minutes and amassed 115 assists. After his sophomore season, Bligen transferred to Garden City (NJCAA - KJCCC), a junior college in Garden City, Kansas. With the Broncbusters, Bligen averaged 15.6 points, 5.3 boards and almost two assists per game in 32 matchups. Shooting over 48 percent from the field, he finished 134-204 from the free throw line (65.7 percent). Attending St. Andrew's Episcopal prior to arriving at Longwood, Bligen was a three-time All-MAC selection in high school and was also twice named his team's most valuable player. As a Lion, he tallied 18 points, 4.4 assists and 8.0 rebounds per game over his four-year career. In the classroom, Bligen earned academic honors at each of his three stops, including earning the Outstanding Student Award at Garden City.
Outside of basketball, Bligen enjoys cooking and fashion design. He plans to major in business finance at the University's Silberman College of Business. His father, Samuel, played basketball at St. Thomas Aquinas where Anderson served as the head men's basketball coach for the last nine seasons.
"Heru is a tough, hard-nosed, versatile guard," commented Anderson. "He can guard a lot of positions and had a great year in the Jayhawk Conference. We think he can have an immediate impact."
A local product from just across the border in Rockland County, N.Y., Jo'el Emanuel arrives in Bergen County after playing interscholastic hoops at Suffern and Millwood. The Suffern, N.Y. native will wrap things up at Millwood Prep this spring and was a three-sport athlete during his high school career. Emanuel averaged 14 points per game over his career and earned All-Section Honors at Suffern and All-NEPSAC while at Millwood. The 6'6 forward also earned his team's Coaches' Award and Most Outstanding Player honor in basketball. On the track he qualified for states (N.Y.) and placed 14th in the high jump. Emanuel won the county crown in both the high jump and triple jump. Moving to the volleyball court, Emanuel was a three-year varsity player and garnered All-State Recognition.
Away from sports, Emanuel has seven years of saxophone experience, playing alto, tenor and baritone and serves as a camp councilor, in addition to conducting community service on farms. His brother Nathan played basketball at Nyack and Westchester.
"Jo'el really fits how our style and how we want to play. He has a high motor, is really good in the open floor and can defend and rebound at a high level," said Anderson. "He has a bright future at FDU."
Rounding out the trio of additions to the squad, Prince comes to FDU from Dodge City (NJCAA - KJCCC) where he averaged 7.7 points per game in 35 games played. Beginning his collegiate career at Mercy (NCAA Division II - ECC), the Waterbury, Conn. native averaged almost 20 points and 12 rebounds per game in one season with the Mavericks. Matriculating from Crosby High School and Notre Dame Prep, Prince enjoys working out and playing video games. An honor roll student, Prince participated in ballroom dancing while in fourth grade.
"Kerwin is someone I know very well. He is a tremendous competitor who is relentless is how hard he plays," said Anderson. "His toughness and versatility up-front will be big for us."
