2019-20 FDU Season Recap
The 2019-20 season marked the first for FDU under head coach
Angelika Szumilo, who arrived on the Hackensack following a successful tenure as an assistant at Fordham. On December 10, Szumilo picked up her first win, a 68-59 victory over in-state foe NJIT, and then proceeded to lead the Knights to new heights. The Knights finished conference play with a 9-9 record and earned the third seed in the NEC Tournament where they topped sixth-seed Bryant for the team's first conference tournament win since 1992.
Scouting the Knights
FDU was selected to finish fourth in the NEC Preseason Poll, its highest selection since 2015. The Knights averaged 57.0 points per game last season and connected on 197 three-pointers. The Burgundy and Blue return four of their top five scorers from a season ago and nine players in total including senior forward
Madison Stanley who averaged 10.7 rebounds and 4.3 rebounds per contest.
Coach Szumilo's Thoughts on the New Season
"The last nine months have not been easy on anyone; we are very grateful to be in the position to play basketball this year. Our team is excited to compete and get after someone other than their own teammates. Overall, we have done a great job at learning how to be adaptable and flexible and I applaud our team for their commitment, sacrifice and hard work on and off the court during such uncharted times. It hasn't been easy, it's not going to be easy, but we will get through it together and we will be a better program because of it. On behalf of our WBB program, I wanted to thank [Director of Athletics] Brad Hurlbut, [Associate Athletic Director]
Cathy Liggett, [Associate Athletic Director]
Jason Young, [Associate Athletic Director] Jen Quirk, our strength and conditioning coach, Dave Downey and our athletic trainers, Nick Hodgman and Courtney McClain, for all of the hard work they have put in to put us in the position to compete this year while maintaining the health and safety of our student-athletes as number-one priority."
What's Next
The Burgundy and Blue will travel to Fordham on Tuesday, December 8. Tip-off time has yet to be announced.
