Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Knights Capture Second-Straight NEC Title

FDU wins 40th straight NEC game to cap off second-consecutive unbeaten league campaign.

HACKENSACK, N.J. – FDU's women's basketball team won its first back-to-back NEC Championships in program history Sunday afternoon, beating LIU, 79-57, in the NEC Tournament championship game at the Bogota Savings Center. The win is FDU's 40th consecutive conference win and the Knights are now one of two teams in Division I to finish back-to-back years with a perfect record in league play, joining UConn from the Big East.

THE STORY

FDU - which has now won 22 straight games, the third-longest active winning streak in the country - only led 12-8 after a relatively quiet first quarter, but the Knights broke the game open with a 17-4 run over the first 5:06 of the second quarter to go up 29-12 following a jumper by Ava Renninger with 4:54 to go before halftime. LIU closed to within 32-20 after a pair of Kadidia Toure free throws with 2:20 left in the period, but the Knights closed the half with a 6-2 run to take a 38-22 lead into halftime.

FDU (30-4) made 15 of its 32 shots (46.9 percent) in the first half, including 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) from 3-point range, while holding the Sharks (21-11) to just 8-for-30 shooting (26.7 percent), including 0-for-6 on 3-pointers. The Knights also outrebounded LIU, 23-16, and got 13 points from their bench to the Sharks' zero.

In the third quarter, the Knights kept LIU at arm's length, as the Sharks got no closer than 14 points, that coming at 44-30 after a 3-pointer by Toure with 6:16 remaining in the period. FDU's lead stayed between 15 and 19 points the rest of the quarter and the Knights took a 56-37 lead into the final 10 minutes.

The Knights cruised to the tournament title from there, eventually leading by as many as 28 points, at 75-47 following a Bella Toomey jumper with 4:11 remaining. FDU held the Sharks to 15 points or less in three of the four quarters and continued its season-long trend of tough defense that saw the Knights allow just 51.1 points per game, best in the NEC and No. 2 in Division I.
