Box Score TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team secured its fifth victory of the season with a 3-0 defeat of Vermont, the team's fourth shutout of the campaign. With the win the Knights improve to 5-3-0 on the season, while the Catamounts fall to 2-5-1 overall.
Three second-half goals propelled FDU to its first victory in two weeks. Junior co-captain
Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) scored the eventual game winner just two minutes into the second period before turning provider for teammates
Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ) and
Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central ) to round out the scoring.
"I felt we started a little slow with our possession and our pressure to the ball but in the second half we picked the tempo up." Head Coach
Eric Teepe said, "We became more aggressive going towards goal. It was good not only to win but, more importantly, getting back to playing our type of game."
After an even first half, Goulet got things started in the 47th minute when
Esther Rochon (Saint Romuald, Quebec/College Francois-Xavier-Garneau) played her into the box and her impressive strike found the top right corner. Nine minutes later, Goulet played Tice, making her first appearance in two weeks, down the left flank into space. Tice worked past a defender and slipped her shot under the onrushing goalkeeper for the match's second.
Hoekstra added a third in the 74th minute, her fifth goal of the campaign. With the score, the redshirt sophomore is now more than halfway towards matching her record-tying nine goal campaign in 2012.
Friday's contest was the third time this season that Goulet has tallied two assists in a single contest. The pair tonight gives her seven on the young season and 12 for her career, both marks moving her to second on FDU's respective all-time lists.
"Beating a quality team like Vermont should give us a boost in our confidence going into conference play." Teepe said.
The team's five wins over its opening eight fixtures is the best start in program history.
The Knights are now on the road for two away contests before Northeast Conference play begins. First up is Hartford on Thursday, Sept. 25. Kickoff from West Hartford is slated for 6 p.m.
