Box Score TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team defeated Robert Morris, 2-1, on a last-second goal for the second consecutive Sunday. With the victory, the Knights improve to 10-4-0 (3-1-0 NEC) on the season, while the Colonials fall to 2-10-2 (0-2-1 NEC) overall.
"I think today we struggled a little with fatigue as the match went on." Head Coach
Eric Teepe said, "We were able to create numerous chances but lacked patience in front of goal. However, it was a great way to finish the game, which I felt we deserved."
FDU outshot the visitors, 19-4, over the opening 45 minutes but were unable to find the back of the net. The hosts finally broke through when junior
Esther Rochon (Saint Romuald, Quebec/College Francois-Xavier-Garneau) connected with a well-struck ball from a
Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ) feed just before the hour mark.
Following the match's first goal, the Colonials began to gain momentum and created several chances. One of those chances was put away by freshman Kayla Kelley six minutes later for her first collegiate goal.
FDU was in control of possession and chances for the remainder of the half but couldn't find a breakthrough. The squad peppered the Robert Morris goal with shot after shot that eventually pushed past 30, which set a new program record.
It was the 36th strike of the contest with eight seconds remaining that pushed past Becky Schoenecker, who had made a career-high 16 saves up until that moment, and won it for the hosts. It was
Connie Lewis (Outer Cove, Newfoundland/Gonzaga )' sixth goal of the season but her first since a home match against Saint Peter's, all the way back on September 5.
Both goals were assisted by Tice and give her six on the season, all coming in her last six matches.
Six FDU players had four shots or more, including reigning NEC Player of the Week
Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central )'s game-high seven.
The victory ties a FDU program record for wins in a season and the two goals also set a program record for a single season with 32.
The Knights are back on the road next Sunday, Oct. 19, for a 1 p.m. NEC clash against Bryant. NEC Front Row will have live coverage of the contest.
