TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team concluded the 2013 home portion of the schedule with a tough loss on Senior Day to St. John's, 4-3, on Thursday at the FDU Tennis Courts. With the victory, the Red Storm improves to 8-9 on the season, while the Knights see their five-match win streak come to an end, dropping their record to 7-6 overall.
FDU had the early momentum after winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles' point. The first match to end was at No. 3, as sophomore
Dina Guzairova (Sochi, Russia/Chelyabinsk #8 ) and junior
Manuela Leme (Varginha, Brazil/E.E. Antania Alves Cruz) were defeated by Gvansta Robakidze and Yanita Arnaudova, 8-3.
The Knights then bounced back, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 by identical 8-7 scores. Senior
Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) and freshman
Celine Maier (Nuremberg, Germany /Bertolt-Brecht-Schule Nuremberg) finished their match first at No. 2, defeating Nevena Selakovic and Ksenia Mikhaylova. At No. 1, senior
Anna Rapoport (Moscow, Russia/#1239 ) and freshman
Nicole Chis (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park) clinched the point for the Knights after their victory over Amber Washington and Diamond Adams.
In singles, the Johnnies won four of the six matches to secure the match, claiming victories at No. 1, 2, 3 and 5. Maier won at No. 4, 6-3, 7-6 (4), over Yanita Arnaudova, and Leme took the No. 6 match, 6-1, 6-4, over Gvansta Robakidze.
“Although we did not come away with the win, we battled hard and played at a high level,” Head Coach
Jonathan Buchman said. “I saw improvements in many of the things we have been working on in practice and in previous matches come to fruition. I was happy to honor our seniors, as well as name Manu Leme our 2013-14 captain.”
FDU will conclude the 2013 regular season on Tuesday, April 16 with a 3 p.m. match at Concordia.
