HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team held on to defeat Wagner, 59-54, in the season finale at Stratis Arena in Northeast Conference action Monday night. With the victory, the Knights finish the season 12-17 (7-11 NEC), while the Seahawks conclude the year 3-26 (2-16 NEC).
Bryant defeated Robert Morris in overtime, 61-56, Monday night, preventing FDU from making the NEC Tournament.
Sophomore
Erika Livermore (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) led the Knights with her 23rd double-double of the season, sharing game-high honors with 19 points and pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds, while going 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Sophomore
Amanda Andrades (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) also collected a double-double, the first of her career, with 13 points and career-best 10 rebounds. She also dished out a game-high five assists, picked up a career-best five steals and made 10-of-15 free throws, setting new career highs in makes and attempts.
Freshman
Kelsey Cruz (Chester, Va./Lloyd C. Bird) chipped in nine points for FDU, while junior
Desiree Crawford (Aurora, Ontario/Cardinal Carter Catholic) tied her season high in rebounds with 11.
The difference in the game was at the free throw line, where the Knights outscored Wagner, 28-12. FDU went to the charity stripe 39 times compared to only 17 chances for the Seahawks. The Knights also won the battle on the glass, 55-44, and forced 23 turnovers.
FDU struggled from the floor, shooting only 21.5 percent (14-of-65), including just 3-of-15 from three-point range. Wagner shot 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the field and connected on 6-of-21 from behind the arc.
Offense was at a premium in the first half, with the Knights leading 11-3, after Cruz's three-pointer with 6:57 to go before halftime.
The Seahawks started to heat up and used a 14-3 spurt to take a 17-14 lead with 2:52 remaining in the first half, but FDU came back to tie the contest at 21 going into halftime.
With the Knights leading 31-29 with 12:47 left in the game, a three-pointer from sophomore
Tiffany Grant (Odenton, Md./Arundel) started a 10-0 run, which ultimately gave FDU control the rest of the way.
A pair of free throws by Andrades capped the scoring spurt and gave the Knights a 41-29 lead with 10:28 remaining.
At the 7:56 mark, Wagner cut the lead to 43-37, but over the next four minutes, only FDU scored a basket before the Seahawks cut the lead back to six with 3:53 to go.
Andrades put the Knights back up 10 on two different occasions with a pair of free throws each time, but Wagner could only get as close as five, allowing FDU to secure the 59-54 victory.
Jordyn Peck came off the bench to lead Wagner with 19 points. Marie Archambault added 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while Veronick Fournier collected a team-high 10 rebounds.
FDU loses senior
Torrie Childs (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central) but will return all five starters and 12 letterwinners in 2013-14.
