TEANECK, N.J. – With the help of three first-half goals, the Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team earned its first win of the season over Delaware State on Friday, Aug. 31. The Knights defeated the Hornets 5-0 to move to 1-1-3 on the season, while the Hornets drop to 0-2.
The Knights led 3-0 at the break with two goals from freshman Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central ) and one from classmate Erin Kearns (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen). In the second half the Knights added goals from returners Lindzy Williams (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood) and Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) to give the Knights an ultimate 5-0 advantage.
The 5-0 win ties the record for most goals scored at University Stadium for the FDU women's soccer program.
The Knights took control of the game early on with two quick shots. In the fourth minute Hoekstra received a ball in the middle from Julie Woolridge (St. John's, Newfoundland/Bishops College) who had dribbled down the left sideline. Hoekstra dribbled into the box and took a shot that went past Hornet keeper Katelyn Koslosky to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
FDU continued to pressure the DSU backline and created several attacks that were broken up before a shot was attempted.
In the 26th minute Elizabeth Langer (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) sent a ball into the box to Hoekstra. Hoekstra dribbled past two defenders and rocketed a shot to the upper right hand corner from 12 yards out to give FDU a 2-0 lead.
Just three minutes later the Knights were awarded a corner kick. Langer placed the kick in front of the goal in the six yard box where Kearns won the attack and put the ball in the net to give FDU a 3-0 advantage. It was Kearns' first goal of her collegiate career.
The Hornets recorded their first shot on goal in the 32nd minute and challenged Sage DoVale (Lilburn, Ga./Collins Hill) in net twice more before the end of the half.
At the break the Knights led the shot count 10-3 with a 6-2 shot on goal advantage. FDU took five corner kicks with none earned by DSU in the first 45 minutes.

In the 75th minute Hoekstra sent the ball into the middle to Williams. Williams took two touches in front of the net and shot to the lower left corner, sending the ball past Koslosky to give FDU a 4-0 lead.
With seven minutes on the clock the Knights were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box. Sophomore Schiavoni placed the kick to the lower left corner of the goal, beating Koslosky and putting the Knights up 5-0.
Overall, the Knights outshot the Hornets, 18-4, with an 8-3 shot on goal advantage. DoVale recorded her second-consecutive shutout of the season with three saves.
The Knights travel to nearby Lawrenceville, N.J. on Sunday to face Rider University. Kickoff at Ben Cohen Field is slated for 3 p.m.
