W. Basketball Suffers 51-62 Setback at Mount St. Mary's

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's basketball team fell on the road, 51-62, to Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD on Saturday, Feb. 18.  With the loss, the Knights fall to 12-15 overall, with a 7-8 record in Northeast Conference play.  The Mountaineers are now 12-14 with an 8-7 mark in NEC competition.

Freshman Erika Livermore (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) led the Knights with her sixth double-double of her career, amassing 13 points and 11 rebounds.  However, it was the Mountaineer's sharp shooting from three-point range that tipped the game in their favori.

After shooting just 10.5 percent from the floor in the first ten minutes of play, the Mountaineers went 10-for-21 on shots from three-point range, including 6-for-10 in the second half.  MSM also went 16-for-20 from the free-throw line to out-score the Knights.

The Knights started with a six-point lead, five minutes into the game.  Midway through the half, FDU had increased their advantage to 19-8, and held The Mount to under 20 percent from the field.       

In a four minute span, The Mount scored 14-unanswered points to take their first lead of the half.  A three-pointer by Mariah Nunes (Ajax, Ontario/Bill Crothers ) cut the MSM momentum, but three-consecutive three pointers in the final two minutes gave MSM a 24-30 lead at the break.

The Knights held MSM to a 31.0 shooting percentage through the first 20 minutes of play, while shooting 38.5 percent.  FDU out-rebounded MSM, 23-14.  MSM went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in the first half; the Knights shot 2-for-6.

The teams traded baskets to start to second half, but two three-pointers by Jessie Kaufman increased the Mountaineers' lead to ten points.  A traditional three-point play by MSM gave them a 13-point lead, 43-30, with 12 minutes left to play.

FDU scored six-unanswered points to cut the lead to five points with eight minutes remaining.  Two consecutive three pointers by The Mount gave them a ten-point cushion through the three-minute mark.

Jump shots by Mariyah Laury (Orange, NJ/Orange) and Desiree Crawford (Aurora, Ontario/Cardinal Carter Catholic) cut the deficit to six points with two minutes on the clock. 

Mount St. Mary's went 5-for-5 from the charity stripe in the final minute of play to seal the win, 51-62. 

Livermore and Laury led the Knights with 13 points each.  Livermore also led all players with 11 rebounds.  Danielle Pankey (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) had eight points and eight rebounds for FDU.

MSM's Jessie Kaufman led all scorers with a career-high 25 points.  Sydney Henderson added 19 points and 10 rebounds. 

The Knights shot 36.8 percent through 40 minutes, with 21 made shots on 57 attempts.  The Mount went 18-for-52 by made 10-of-21 three-pointers.  MSM shot 16-for-20 from the charity stripe, while FDU went just 7-for-14. 

“We did a great job on the boards tonight,” said Head Coach Pete Cinella.  “We shot the ball okay at times, but we gave up to many three-point shots.”

The Knights will travel to Wagner on Monday, Feb. 20 for their final road contest of the regular season.
